about

Living a normal, day to day life, a man was going through his regular routine. He would venture antique stores and auction houses for interesting things, but otherwise life was bland. One day, however, fate would send him down a new path.

At an auction house that appears to be a small catholic church during regular hours, several items have come and gone for purchase. Next up for auction is a large peculiar mirror with off-white trim and is quite robust. For some reason, the mirror itself is covered with a cloth. Having taken fancy to the mirror, he places a bid. Several others then bid after him. He decides to just go big and places a large bid, winning the auction. It was the only excitement he would expect for a while, as a stale life is the norm in his world.

The mirror arrives in a large box where it is taken inside. Later that day he unpacks it and sees the cloth still in place. He takes off the cloth and is startled. Staring back at him is himself, but it is not him. A doppelganger wearing what looked like old military garb is in his place. The ‘other’ does not mimic him and does not respond to gestures. He looks behind the mirror for a plug as if it is some type of screen, but there isn’t one. As he looks back at the mirror, a lovely lady is hugging the ‘other’. She too was dressed in attire that resembles a time from long ago. There is sadness on the other side of the mirror that reaches through the glass as if words need not be spoken; he is leaving and the future is uncertain. He tries to get their attention to no avail.

Over the next few days, he would see the women come into view from time to time. Although at first he saw her one way, he soon realized things were changing. Feelings of butterflies would set in when seeing her. He felt a little crazy, but yearned to have the feeling, even if for a moment, since his life was so grey.

One day he approaches the mirror and tries again to get her attention. Even though her back is to him, she is suddenly distracted and peers over her shoulder back at the mirror. She cautiously approaches it as if she may finally see him or feel his presence. His heart grows and he becomes frozen in place. The two of them stood there staring at the mirror as if the universe fell away and all that’s left is them. She backed up slowly with eyes of confusion, then withdrew from the room. He could see her, but she could not see him. He sank to the floor and decided that he could not take it anymore. He boxed up the mirror and brought it back to the auction house to be sold again.

When arriving to the auction house, the clerk says “Oh this thing again? People keep reselling this. No one seems to keep it very long”. He wanted to keep the mirror but did not have the strength to endure it. He walks back to the elevator and gets on. As the door shuts a voice calls out “Hold the door please!”. He stops the door to let the passerby on. Suddenly, emotions channel every facet of his being. “It’s her! How?” he thinks to himself. As the doors close, through its cracks you can see him light up and look her way. Just as it appears he is about to say

lyrics

I think I’ve figured out
What’s going down
I’ve seen you only
One way
And I think about your world
Just maybe
You’ll see me
Clearly
Half a world away
Don’t think about tomorrow
Live in the moment
Only
I’m right here
You’re so far
Steps away
I’m right here
Seems one way

Seems one way
One way
Maybe
Maybe
It’s one way
Seems one way
Maybe
It’s one way

We go on
On and on
For sake of knowing
It’s a one-way mirror
If you could see
What things could be
See me
I’m right here
You’re right there
Steps away
I’m right here
Seems one way

Seems one way
One way
Maybe
Maybe
It’s one way
Seems one way
Maybe
Maybe
It’s one way

I think I’ve figured out
What’s going down
Don’t think about tomorrow
One way

You’re so far
Steps away
I’m right here

Seems one way
Maybe
Maybe
It’s one way
Seems one way
Maybe
It’s one way
